1. PERC-coated cells

PERC, or Passivated Emitter Rear Cell

Photovoltaic modules made with polycrystalline silicon technology, using passivation of the rear cell wall, have higher module efficiency by increasing solar absorption efficiency. The back passivation causes sunlight passing through the cell in the wavelength range of 1000 to 1180 nm to reflect off the back reflective layer, directing photons back into the cell. Thus, radiation, which is lost with standard cells, becomes an additional source of electricity when using cells with bottom passivation. In addition, the PERC layer lowers the temperature of the working cell (as is well known, the high temperature of photovoltaic cells reduces energy production). With this technology, the module achieves higher energy yields due to more efficient absorption of solar radiation.

A measure of REC’s photovoltaic module evaluation is also provided by the results of an independent laboratory test conducted in Aachen, Germany. The subject of the study was the measurement of current/voltage (IV) characteristics at the module’s output. On average, REC’s polycrystalline modules generated more electricity than each of the 45 modules from other manufacturers tested. REC’s products outperformed 45 different other types of modules in the same technology, thin-film and monocrystalline.

2. Division of the module into 2 sections

With standard modules, even with a little shade, parts or all of the module stops working. In the best case 33.3% of the module does not work and in the worst case, depending on how the shadow falls, even the whole module does not work. Twin Peak modules use a division of the module into 2 sections, which results in a 16.6% higher energy yield when the shadow falls on part of the module, e.g. through a leaf or a chimney (figure below):

If the lower surface of the module is shaded, e.g. by snow or is too close to the next row, Twin Peak achieves 50% more production than a standard panel (pictured below)

Thanks to the use of such a division, the photovoltaic module achieves higher energy yields and also it gives the possibility to design modules in places where there is partial shading, e.g. through antennas/masts, and there is no other possibility of siting the modules.

3. 120 cells instead of 60 from the same module area

By laser cutting standard cells in half, we have 120 cells instead of 60, resulting in a reduction in the cells’ internal resistance, higher power output and improved performance in various solar conditions, as well as an increase in the cells’ resistance to micro-cracks.

It is also worth noting that REC modules more than double the IEC test standards and are subjected to the most stringent quality controls.

4. Four busbars

On each cell there are 9z thin rails (busbars) through which current flows. The use of 4 busbars instead of 3, as in standard modules, shortens the path the electron must travel and also reduces internal resistance and allows better current flow. By being able to use thinner tracks, moreover, the coverage of the cell is reduced. An additional advantage is the increased mechanical strength of the module against snow and wind.

Another innovation of Norwegian engineers is the separation of the junction-box into 3 parts (photo of the back wall of the module below). In standard modules one junction-box is installed. Thanks to the solution used in Twin Peak modules, the temperature of the wires has been reduced, the cooling of by-pass diodes has been improved and the failure rate of these components has also been reduced.
